The homeless campers and protesters have occupied the Capitol Hill neighborhood park for several months, setting up barricades, threatening Seattle park employees and creating mounds of garbage and trash laced with used needles.

Poverty is not a crime: Protesters not leaving Cal Anderson Park until demands are met Jonathan Choe, KOMO News Reporter Poverty is not a crime: Protesters not leaving Cal Anderson Park until demands are met Replay Video They are not leaving until demands are met.  That’s what protestors are saying after taking over an empty house right across the street from Seattle’s Cal Anderson Park. “This started as a response and outgrowth of the protection of Cal Anderson against police violence,” said protest spokesperson who only goes by “Mel C.” A group calling themselves housing advocates have clearly made themselves at home. They took over this empty property at 1106 East Denny Way Wednesday evening, right across the street from the park, saying they are doing it to support and bring attention to the city’s homeless community.
