Blowing apart a monstrous Israeli lie

It’s a monstrous lie, but Israeli propagandists keep repeating it: Palestinians deliberately sacrifice their own children just to make Israel look bad. I had the opportunity to debunk this vicious, dehumanizing libel to the face of one such propagandist when I appeared on CGTN’s The Heat on Thursday. The show begins with an interview with Palestinian politician Hanan Ashrawi. Then I was on a panel with two Israeli propagandists, Jeremy Saltan, a settler from Chicago and a member of Yamina, an alliance of extreme right-wing political parties, and Amotz Asa-El, a commentator for The Jerusalem Post. Both regurgitated a predictable barrage of talking points aimed at justifying Israel’s targeting of Palestinian civilians.

New Zealand state pension fund divests from Israeli banks

Houses under construction in the Israeli settlement of Eldad, south of Bethlehem, December 2019. Israel’s colonization of Palestinian land in the occupied West Bank is a war crime. (Trocaire) New Zealand’s $33 billion national pension fund has excluded five Israeli banks from its portfolio because of their role in financing Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank. An assessment by the NZ Super Fund concludes that holding shares in Israel’s biggest banks would violate its responsible investment policy. The document cites New Zealand’s 2016 vote for UN Security Council resolution 2334 which reaffirms the illegality of the settlements, as well as statements by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that he intends to proceed with large-scale annexations of occupied Palestinian land.

Israeli soldiers cheer after protester shot

This video shows Israeli occupation forces celebrating after a sniper shoots and injures a Palestinian protesting the theft of land by settlers in the central occupied West Bank on 27 November. The video, published this month by the human rights group B’Tselem, was filmed by press photographer Hisham Abu Shaqrah as he stood behind an Israeli Border Police jeep near the community of Ein Samia. It shows the sniper lying on the ground and then firing a 22-caliber bullet at the leg of a protester identified by B’Tselem as Y.B. “I heard the officers cheering the sniper and congratulating him as if he’d done something great,” Abu Shaqrah told B’Tselem. “They looked happy and were laughing and patting him on the back.”
