£1 9 million from Culture Recovery Fund for Cumbria

CULTURAL institutions up and down Cumbria have been awarded almost £2 million in the latest round of funding from the Government. The Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport announced on April 2 that more than 2,700 cultural and creative organisations would receive a share of £400 million, with £1.9 million going to Cumbria. Among the beneficiaries was the Ullswater Steamers, which will receive £425,000 in the second round of funding. The iconic attraction has been handed a lifeline by the funding, which will allow it to look ahead to spring and summer with plans to reopen and recover. Mark Horton, Ullswater ‘Steamers’ General Manager, says: “I am delighted that Ullswater ‘Steamers’ have been recognised as being such a significant part of our regional and national culture and heritage.

Christmas Day screening for Keswick cinema

Christmas Day screening for Keswick cinema A double bill of festive favourites will be screened at Keswick’s Alhambra Cinema on Christmas Day. The main feature will be a new 2020 film version of A Christmas Carol, which will start immediately after the Queen’s Speech is broadcast live on the big screen at the St John’s Street cinema at 3pm. “We thought long and hard about what to show for what will be our first ever Christmas Day screening,” said the cinema’s co-owner Carol Rennie. “We considered a romcom like Love Actually or It’s A Wonderful Life along with other ideas but in the end, we have gone for something traditional, with a modern rendition of a good old honest Christmas tale which no-one will have seen before.
