Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu has announced plans to set up the Lateef Jakande Leadership Academy to honour the first Civilian Governor of the state, late Lateef Kayode Jakande.
Sanwo-Olu stressed that the foundation will be supported by an Act of the State Assembly to give it legal backing.
The governor made the remarks on Wednesday, at “A Day of Tributes” held in honour of late Jakande at rehabilitated Mobolaji Olufunsho Johnson Stadium Arena, formerly named, Onikan Stadium.

ENGINEER B. Oloro was the rector of the now vandalised Lagos State Polytechnic from 1992 to 1999, a school built by Alhaji Lateef Kayode Jakande, the man who developed what we now know as Lagos in just four years. His bright idea of metro line for Lagos was like the polytechnic officially destroyed by General Muhammadu Buhari in 1984 and the full cost of the contract paid with no rail. We cannot but weep that those who denied Lagos that service are now building one to Niger Republic with our money in a season when Rotimi Amaechi under whose watch cars are being asked to watch their speed for cows is asking us what has cows have got to do with transportation on national television.
Tinubu made the remark in a condolence statement on Thursday in Lagos.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Jakande died in the early hours of Thursday at 91.
The deceased, was a journalist, an administrator and politician who served as the governor of Lagos State between 1979 and 1983.
According to Tinubu,
“Papa Jakande could appropriately be described as the ‘last of the titans’ ranking with the likes of Chief Obafemi Awolowo, Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe, Chief Adekunle Ajasin and Pa Abraham Adesanya.
Others according to Tinubu include:
Chief Bola Ige, Chief Olabiyi Onabanjo, Alhaji Balarabe Musa and
Alhaji Aminu Kano, among others.“
