[File photo by Derrick Stuckly]MINERAL WELLS – The Brownwood Lady Lions put themselves in position to play for the District 4-4A girls soccer championship after rallying to defeat Mineral Wells in a penalty kick shootout Friday night.
Trailing 1-0 throughout the bulk of the contest, the Lady Lions finally scored with 92 seconds left in regulation when Watts Jones ripped the tying shot from 25 yards out.
In the penalty kick shootout, Kennedi Johnson and Ibis Alvarado converted goals while Brooke Price recorded three saves in goal to give the Lady Lions the victory.

STEPHENVILLE – In a battle for first place in District 4-4A girls soccer, the Brownwood Lady Lions led Stephenville 2-1 until 10 minutes remained in regulation, where the Honeybees drew even and went on to win a penalty kick shootout Tuesday night.
Stephenville hit five penalty kicks to Brownwood’s three – by Ibis Alvarado, Ataleigh Constancio and Kennedi Johnson – as the Honeybees moved to 3-0 district while the Lady Lions slipped to 2-1 in league play and 8-3 overall.
Johnson and Watts Jones scored Brownwood’s goals in regulation.
The Brownwood Lady Lions remained undefeated in District 4-4A soccer action – and perfect at Gordon Wood Stadium – with a 1-0 triumph over the Mineral Wells Lady Rams Friday night.
Despite owning the momentum throughout much of the contest, the Lady Lions (8-2, 2-0) were unable to light up the scoreboard until 15:06 remained in the contest when Molly Oliver scored the game’s only goal off an assist from Tessa Goodwin, who recently joined the team following the conclusion of basketball season.
“When Tessa came out she told me she was a defensive player, but yesterday at practice I put on her offense just to see what she could do and what she was capable of because I’d never seen her play soccer,” said Lady Lions head coach Alexis Mosqueda. “In practice I saw that she can get these cross balls up in the air, which is exactly what we’ve been lacking this season, and she did that as soon as I put her in.
