Napoleon Bonaparte’s body lies inside a gargantuan red quartzite sarcophagus under the dome of the Invalides complex in Paris. It has just been restored to its original splendour after gilding and meticulous cleaning, in time for 5 May – the 200th anniversary of his death on the British island of Saint Helena at the age of 51.
