On December 6th, Romanians went to the polls to elect the members of the country’s two parliamentary houses – the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate. In this difficult period for the country, the elections registered the lowest voter turnout since the fall of communism in Romania. Only five parties won seats in parliament. The big winner was the Social Democratic Party (28.90 per cent in the Chamber of Deputies and 29.32 per cent in the Senate). The party of the current President Klaus Iohannis, the National Liberal Party, took second place (25.19 per cent in the Chamber of Deputies and 25.58 per cent in the Senate).
