For Mabel Uhde’s 100th birthday, her nephew Jon Nygren created a large yard sign to place in front of Alexandria Assisted Living near Lake Cowdry. The sign asks passersby to honk once for Uhde’s birthday because her window overlooks the road. “She has a big heart and is an incredible lady,” Nygren said. (Contributed)

Rose Arendt of Alexandria has told family members “I never planned to be 100,” but she will reach that benchmark on Thursday, Feb. 4.
She moved to Alexandria in 1946 with her husband Robert and their two oldest sons. They lived in a few different spare rooms above the dental office where her husband worked until an apartment opened up.
