The poor attendance trend has only worsened this year: 37% of city students are repeatedly out so far, according to the DOE a percentage that, if it persists through the end of the year, would be far higher than any year-end chronic absence rate going back at least to 2000.
Public and charter school staff and kids reported more than 4,600 cases last week, compared to roughly 2,700 last week and under 2,000 the week before, according to DOE data.
