Only a year ago, La Boria, now the founder of The Flow Initiative Foundation in Jersey City, had never heard of “period poverty.” She first learned the term from an article detailing the issue for girls in Africa. Though La Boria didn’t think it was a problem in the United States, she researched it anyway. What she found was a study by the Always brand that stated one in five girls misses school due to a lack of period products, like pads and tampons. So, she decided to do something about it.
