Will talk about later to get to senator alexanders remarks at the 10 30 scheduled time. Thank you, mister president. It is such an honor to be here and to join my colleagues in paying tribute to senator alexander, there are many that want to speak and have a few words to say. All of us wish we could do this to a background of music with lamar playing the piano. That would be the proper setting but i am so pleased to stand and honor the three terms of service in this body and the way he touched the lives of individuals in this body and millions of tennesseans. We know that he has talked about it in his remarks, he has worked with educators. He has worked with innovators. He has worked with the healthcare community, and works with entertainers, many of whom called tennessee home. When i was serving in the house and representing tennessees seventh Congressional District so many times i would look over here and i would say what is lamar not working on today because he always had such a bro
Be determined by the two leaders. The presiding officer without objection. Mr. Mcconnell now, mr. President , this week our friend and colleague, the senior senator from tennessee, will mark a major milestone in his states history. As of tomorrow, Lamar Alexander will have served as tennessees governor or u. S. Senator for 24 years, eight months and 15 days. More combined years in offices than any other tennessean. Of course, senator alexander also remains the only tennessee governor ever popularly elected to the United States senate. The only Tennessee Republican to be undefeated in six statewide primary elections, and his 2008 general election vote total of 1,579,477 votes is still the largest ever recorded by a tennessee statewide candidate. So, mr. President , i ask consent that a statement from the tennessee secretary of state, trey hargan, who has calculated each of these political accomplishments, appear in the record following my remarks. I want to give a speech now. He gave a speech ripping into senator foraker. He ended up responding. They ended up not serving all the courses ort entertainment because it was so biting. Because it was so ferocious, they ended up realizing they had to get rid of the off the record that year. People had to write about that. Thats probably the single most surprising event of any dinner. George condon International Dinner historian, thank you very much for being with us. Surely. Again, i always think back to franklin and the rising sun and thats exactly what weve seen through the years. This little humble room is really everything that the United States has been and will be. Its going to grow from events that happen over about a 1011 year period in this room and its amazing when you think of this humble place and the men that sat here and the things they did, its really incredible the things that have grown from this space. The Pennsylvania State house is a real name of independence. It was pennsylvanias capitol until 1789. Pennsylvania moves its government west to ultimately the center of the state, to harrisburg. Well, at that point the building, theyre using space in the building and renting it out. Its not the Capitol Building anymore. Its probably one of the first where were looking and embracing history. People are starting to be able to purchase their copies of the declaration of independence and put them above the fireplace. And were celebrating the words and the actual document. So fortunately, this room kind of becomes a Historic Place before they got to the point of totally getting rid of the building and turning it down to build something new. Were really lucky in a lot of ways it was used long enough it became important. By the mid1800s, this whole thing is a museum. One of the most fascinating stories in this room when the liberty bell, spent almost a hundred years in our bell tower cracked, they put it in this room. And one of my favorite days thats not one of the days of the revolutionary wars comes 150 years ago today th
