Russian ministry hopes to find alternatives to Indian tea imports
MOSCOW. May 19 (Interfax) - A decrease in tea imports from India that could potentially push up prices for tea in Russia could be offset by imports from other countries, such as Sri Lanka, Kenya and China, the Industry and Trade Ministry said. Imports from India can be replaced by supplies of product from other countries that specialize in exporting tea, which has become possible thanks to the diversification of Russian tea imports, Russia s trade envoy in India, Alexander Rybas was quoted as saying in a ministry press release.
Federal Customs Service data show that Russian tea imports from India have been falling since 2018 and in 2020 amounted to 27% of total imports of tea, while imports from Sri Lanka accounted for 33%, he said.
