On Dec. 2, English-language state-run newspaper China Daily cited research from the National Cancer Institute in Milan, Italy, to claim that COVID-19 infections likely appeared in Italy in September 2019, before the outbreak in China.
In an interview with Radio Free Asia (RFA) published on Dec. 7, Giovanni Apolone, the institute’s scientific director, responded to the China Daily claim, pointing out that part of his comments were edited out by Chinese Communist Party (CCP) media. He had said the virus originated in the Chinese city of Wuhan, Apolone told RFA.
