Review: Lawrence Mooney left the crowd in a lurch with ‘Beauty’
Words by Alexander Crowden
★★½
A big crowd packed into the second auditorium of the Athenaeum Theatre on Good Friday to see Lawrence Mooney’s latest Melbourne International Comedy Festival show,
Beauty. The crowd was mostly over 40 or so, but all seemed up for a good night of comedy on one of the calendar’s most holy days.
Some ’80s classics were blaring over the PA as the crowd shuffled in, before Technotronic’s iconic ‘Pump up the Jam’ blasted Mooney onstage. Instead of being cut suddenly, the music faded very slowly, much to Mooney’s chagrin. But he kept dancing to it, repeatedly asking the crowd to get involved.

Review: Sam Taunton’s ‘Rooster’ is cool, charming and relatable
Words by Alexander Crowden
It feels a little like Sam Taunton has come out of nowhere.
As it turns out, he isn’t quite the overnight success he seems. A RAW Comedy finalist in 2015, Taunton was selected to be part of the Comedy Zone at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival the following year before being nominated for Best Newcomer at the festival in 2017.
2019 was something of a breakout year for Taunton as he scored weekly segments on
The Project and triple j, also winning the Pinder Prize at MICF. Following this, a top notch review in
