engineers have cut the leaking pipe before they can try to cap it. but a powerful saw didn t work. so they re forced to try something new. terrell brown reports. reporter: now engineers will try to use a pair of giant shears to snip off the leaking oil pipe that s gushing oil into the gulf. i don t think the issue is when or not we can make the second cut, it s how fine and how smooth we can make it. reporter: once the pipe is cut, crews will place a containment valve on top of the leak to siphon some of the oil to the surface. even a partial fix is needed fast. it this thick oil is drifting toward grand isle, louisiana. the slick is more than twice as long as seven mile island and the new cut in the pipe is spewing out even more crude. the oil has spread to more than 125 miles of louisiana s coastline. and has also washed arrest shos in mississippi and alabama. the coast guard has sent boom to louisiana. a distressing development for alabama s governor. all is going
