Three Starbucks locations in Philadelphia will be on strike from Friday, Dec. 16 until Sunday, Dec. 18 as part of a national 'double down' strike to protest the coffee chain's alleged union-busting practices. Baristas at stores on 34th and Walnut streets, 20th and Market streets and 3400 Civic Center Blvd. will be picketing all weekend.
Unionized Starbucks baristas, including those at four Philadelphia locations, went on strike during the coffee chain's annual Red Cup Day. The reusable, limited-edition holiday cup giveaway is one the company's biggest sales days.
ReAnimator, a Philadelphia coffee chain, voluntarily recognized a new workers union, which has joined Local 80 of Workers United. Good Karma, Elixr, Ultimo, Korshak Bagels and several Philly Starbucks locations have also unionized. They mirror a national wave of cafe worker unionization efforts.
