U-M Ann Arbor parents, students rally for safe, in-person graduation

University of Michigan nursing student Reagan Cloutier, 21, described her senior year as a bittersweet experience”  as she rallied with other parents and students on the Ann Arbor campus Saturday, hoping to get the administration to reconsider its plan for a virtual-only spring commencement.  About 20 people outside the Michigan Union on State Street, held up signs and chanted phrases like  Big House, big day, in-person graduation all the way,   to express their frustration over what they called the university s inability to provide a safe and socially distant in-person graduation ceremony for the class of 2021. When announcing its decision Feb. 4, U-M s Office of the President said students who missed out on an in-person ceremony because of the COVID-19 pandemic are invited to participate in future commencement ceremonies of their choosing. But rally attendees said that s not enough.
