Matt Prentice, of the Three Cats restaurant in Clawson, has died at the age of 62.
“It is with great sadness we announce the death of Chef Matt Prentice, who succumbed after a brief non-COVID related illness,” the restaurant said in a statement. “Prentice was a passionate, generous and creative force whose love of service was made evident by the kitchens he created and the beautiful food he so lovingly prepared.”
Prentice was a Detroit native and worked at many restaurants in the area, including Coach Insignia, Northern Lakes Seafood, Shiraz, Morels, Duet, No. VI Chophouse, Plaza Deli and others.

(WXYZ) â Matt Prentice, a chef at Three Cats Restaurant has died of an non COVID-related illness, the restaurant announced on Facebook.
Prentice was a Detroit native and cooked at several restaurants in the area, including Coach Insignia, Northern Lakes Seafood, Shiraz, Morels, Duet, No. VI Chophouse, Plaza Deli and countless others.
Three Cats says Prentice helped jump-start the careers of many well-known chefs in the area, including Chef James Rigato of Mable Gray and Chef Eric Ward of Joe Muerâs Seafood.

Longtime Metro Detroit chef and restaurateur Matt Prentice has died at age 62 after an illness.
Prentice was the culinary force behind many successful and popular Metro Detroit restaurants of the past three decades including Morels, Shiraz, Detroit Prime and Coach Insignia. He was also known for his philanthropical efforts, particularly his work with Cass Community Social Services.
His most recent venture was Three Cats restaurant in Clawson, a partnership with Leon & Lulu retail shop owners Mary Liz Curtin and Stephen Scannell that he debuted in 2019. There, he navigated the pandemic that decimated the restaurant industry in 2020 by offering meal bundles at affordable prices and carryout holiday dinners.
