The engineering whiz had to fight for respect in the studio for years. Now, she’s producing Weezer’s next album

Suzy Shinn grew up listening to bands like Something Corporate and Jack’s Mannequin, so she was thrilled when Andrew McMahon, the vocalist in both bands, called in December with the beginnings of a solo song. The only problem: They had about three days to finish the track. So she set up in her living room in L.A.’s Los Feliz, called a couple of masked-and-distanced friends to engineer and play violin, and made do. “I was like, ‘All right, now we’re going to make a small symphony with your violin for the bridge, ” says Shinn, 29. “I think I used a can of salt as my shaker.”
Initiatives Expand to Advance Virtual Production
Netflix Early creative engagement is critical, says Netflix s director of virtual production.
In a move aimed at developing the U.K. s stake in the emerging field of virtual production, its Department for International Trade and Department for Digital Culture, Media and Sport is backing a new initiative aimed at creating national standards for job training in the field.
The effort will be initiated by ScreenSkills an industry body funded by organizations such as BFI led by a steering group chaired by Alex Hope, former joint managing director of VFX studio DNEG (
Tenet) and ScreenSkills’ vice-chair. Committed participants include Epic Games (developer of Unreal Engine), Ntropic, Sky Studios, UK Research and Innovation, and UK Screen Alliance, with educators such as Bournemouth, Edinburgh Napier, Portsmouth and Ulster Universities.
