City keeps parking management in-house — for now | Sarasota

2 weeks ago Share In addition to passing on options for teaming up with a private parking operator, the commission extended provisions allowing for expanded outdoor dining. Paid parking has a rocky history in the city of Sarasota. In the early 2010s, an effort to install parking meters was met with vocal opposition from downtown merchants, who successfully lobbied officials to rip out the meters shortly after they were installed. In subsequent years, as the city expanded its parking infrastructure, the parking department began to draw increasingly large subsidies from the general fund. Parking Manager Mark Lyons began to once again recommend the establishment of a paid parking program, in part to generate revenue to offset the expenses the city faced. Despite some initial reluctance, in 2018 and 2019, the City Commission again approved parking meters downtown and on St. Armands Circle.

Downtown group explores future parking options | Sarasota

3 weeks ago Share From Main Street parallel parking to a garage at the SCAT transfer station site, merchants and property owners are discussing long-term strategies for reshaping the city’s commercial center. Mark Kauffman knows the idea is ambitious, but he thinks it’s worth the time and effort to fully explore it and perhaps make it a reality. Kauffman, a downtown property owner and member of the Downtown Improvement District, sees an opportunity to dramatically reshape the 1500 block of First Street, home to City Hall and the Sarasota County Area Transit bus transfer station. He envisions consolidating several properties, including the bus station and surface parking lots next to City Hall, into the foundation for a large mixed-use facility that works to address multiple community needs.

Editorial Letters – Week ending November 27, 2020

To: Longboat Key Commissioner BJ Bishop There have recently been several complaints from residents about the lack of precautions at the Key Club properties. I did follow up earlier today with Rick Konsavage, the Managing Director of the Key Club to discuss some of the concerns. He said he is aware of the Town’s mask ordinance and social distancing requirements. He said he has the mandatory mask notice posted at all Club facilities. He said all Club employees are required to wear a mask and members are required to wear masks when in the common areas. Masks are not required when sitting at a table to eat or drink.
