Tuesday, March 17, 2020. The movie theater, like many small businesses around Rochester and New York, are closed due to the coronavirus outbreak. Two months after the couple that ran the Cinema Theater announced its closing, the historic single-screen venue has new operators. Husband and wife Kristina Dinino-Jeffords and Damon Jeffords, who own the Mad Hatter Restaurant and Bakery at 176 S. Goodman St. near Park Avenue, last week finalized an agreement to lease the Cinema, Rochester’s oldest movie theater, from building owner John Trickey, he confirmed.

The Cinema Theater to show movies again

The Cinema Theater marquee has been foreshadowing a reopening of the landmark movie house for weeks, despite headlines in February 2021 that it would be closed for good. Not long after the operators of the Cinema Theater announced in February that Rochester s oldest movie house would close for good, the marquee began flashing a mysterious message that suggested a second showing: “The Cinema Theater Will Return.” Now, new operators, spouses Kristina Dinino-Jeffords and Damon Jeffords, say they are delivering on the marquee’s cryptic promise. “We plan on revitalizing this landmark theater and introducing a unique food menu including alcoholic beverages,” Dinino-Jeffords announced in a Facebook post. “We will be featuring newly released, 1st-run, movies including kid friendly matinees.”

The operators of the Cinema Theater, which dates back to 1914, say they are closing up shop. Audrey Kramer and Alex Chernavsky note that due to the pandemic restrictions, they have not been able to generate much income over the last year. Chernavsky said that when their lease came up for renewal in January, they couldn’t commit to another term, not only because of pandemic, but because of changes going on in the movie industry, with more films going direct to streaming.
