The European Women’s Championship came to an end on Wednesday in Petrovac, Montenegro. Since the games on the top boards finished drawn albeit not without a fight nothing changed in the standings relative to the previous rounds. Meri Arabidze from Georgia and Oliwia Kiolbasa from Poland tied for first place on 8½/11 points. Alexey Sarana became the 2023 European champion after signing a 7-move draw with co-leader Kirill Shevchenko. That draw meant both players had secured at least shared first place, but still had to wait to see if someone else would join them on a final 8½/11 score. Out of the chasers, only Daniel Dardha managed to catch up with the leaders. Tiebreak criteria were used to decide the final placements. The 2022 European Rapid & Blitz Championships took place on December 16-18 in Katowice, Poland. All 22 rounds of blitz were played on Friday, while the 11 rounds of rapid took place over the weekend.
