Before lawyers working for her news organization could find her, Carolyn Sung, a CNN producer, was zip-tied and body-scanned, searched by an officer “who put her hands down Sung’s pants and in her bra,” and then was “ordered to strip and to put on an orange uniform.” One state trooper reportedly yelled at Sung, who is Asian-American, “Do you speak English?” She was one of many journalists reporting on protests after a police officer killed Daunte Wright in Brooklyn Center, Minnesota, near Minneapolis, during the closing days of the murder trial of Derek Chauvin, who killed George Floyd almost one year ago.

The 47 officers who make up the Brooklyn Center Police Department have little in common with the nearly 31,000 people they serve.
Most officers are white, while most residents are people of color. Nearly all officers are male, while the city is mostly female. And, according to Mayor Mike Elliott who in 2019 became the first person of color to lead the city not one officer lives within city limits.
Brooklyn Center in recent decades has transformed from a mostly white suburb into what is now one of the most diverse cities in Minnesota, while its police force has remained largely unchanged.

A portion of the $615 million in federal funds earmarked for Houston s COVID-19 recovery could go towards an additional police cadet class and to pay increases for firefighters, Mayor Sylvester Turner said on Friday.
The mayor said he would add a sixth HPD cadet class in next year’s budget to help address a “significant uptick in violence” throughout Houston, while investing in communities to address things like illegal dumping sites in some of Houston’s poorest districts.
He added that he intended to propose the firefighter raise “with or without” input from the Houston fire union.
