necessarily just patrolling. this was a fighter jet specifically designed to go after some of moammar gadhafi s air defense systems. overnight at some point, the military plane got into some mechanical problems and both of the crew members ejected. their chutes worked just fine but they landed in different places. the pilot was picked up by an osprey. that was sitting off the coast about a hundred miles on the uss kearsarge. the marines, the 26 marine expeditionary unit is on standby any time they fly the sorties and the people took off and picked up the officer. the weapons officer landed in an area and was recovered by the rebels. i was told by a senior defense official, that the rebels treated the crew member very well and then there was a process by which the u.s. military was able to recover that crew member. the bottom line, both now off libyan soil, minor injuries but that is to be expected when you eject from an airplane. it s just amazing how fast this went down.
