April 18, 2021 Share Any new government, whether Right or Left, will find it difficult to manage a majority in the fragmented Congress Preliminary results from the April 11 Presidential Elections in Peru indicate a split vote for the contesting candidates in the first round of voting. The leading candidate in the first round is the leftist Pedro Castillo, from the Far-Left Perú Libre party. Pedro is clearly leading the polls with 19% of the votes. He is followed by Centre-Right Fuerza Popular party’s Keiko Fujimori, who has the second highest lead at 13.3% of votes. The run-off elections between these two top contenders are scheduled to be held on June 6. The top Presidential contenders have laid out their visions for Peru. Pedro Castillo, who rose to fame after the 2017 teacher strikes, proposes radical changes in the functioning of the government. He wants the Peruvian Constitution re-drafted with a host of other changes which will increase the role of the state. At
