N.J. forestry bills may be barking up the wrong tree | Opinion Updated 8:58 AM; The road to unfunded mandates is paved with good intentions in the form of legislation. At least that’s my main take-away with one group of bills that the Legislature is now considering. In a nutshell, Assembly Bill 4843 and its Senate companion, S-3549, would require municipalities and nonprofit organizations that use state Green Acres funds to acquire forestland for parks or recreation to create and implement a “forest stewardship plan” if the property is 25 acres or larger. If the state itself is the buyer, the Department of Environmental Protection would be required to develop the stewardship plan.

New warming center opens in Bridgeton

New warming center opens in Bridgeton Updated Dec 18, 2020; Gateway Community Action Partnership has opened the River’s Edge Warming Center, 7 Washington St., Bridgeton. It is the newest Code Blue warming center and is part of the Cumberland County Code Blue efforts to keep the homeless protected and safe during inclement weather. In accordance with COVID-19 safety guidelines, the center can accommodate 20 homeless individuals on any night the Cumberland County Office of Emergency Management calls Code Blue. Guidelines for calling Code Blue are when temperatures are 32 degrees Fahrenheit or below. The center is handicap accessible and includes all required amenities to provide care safely for those vulnerable area residents.
