Review: Are we born sinners, or good at heart? By Barbara Hall, Special to The Journal © Little Brown Humankind: A Hopeful History Humankind:  A Hopeful History, by Rutger Bregman. Little, Brown and Company, 461 pages. $30. In a recent interview, Rutger Bregman declared his Humankind a hopelessly hubristic book. True, as the 32-year-old Dutchman writes here, he attempts nothing short of championing the good in people. If this seems too facile, impossibly idealistic, he offers a tome of historical and scientific evidence to substantiate his view that, as he has said, power corrupts, but most people are pretty decent. Like most people, nostalgic or not, I like Christmas music. There are few things I enjoy more than sitting in my writing space on a wintry December night, a cup of steaming coffee nearby, a comforting Christmas classic playing in the background, the glimmer of colored lights at the eaves.
