(ABC 6 NEWS) - People in Albert Lea are one step closer to having another healthcare option in town with the groundbreaking of the new MercyOne clinic on Thursday.
It has taken nearly three years to get to this point and now the first phase of about 14,000 square feet will get its start. It will include six primary care doctors and support staff and will eventually have space for specialists on a needed basis. A lot of work went into this and the president of the Albert Lea Healthcare Coalition, Brad Arends said the group had to find another healthcare provider to come to town after Mayo Clinic Health System announced it was moving some services out of Albert Lea. The group raised nearly $5 million dollars to get to this day and most of it came from the community.

The Albert Lea Healthcare Coalition is celebrating the success of the grass-roots movement to take control of local healthcare options by announcing a groundbreaking celebration for the new MercyOne Clinic on Thursday, January 14, 2021, at 10:30 am. Everyone is invited to take part in this historic event.
The groundbreaking will take place at 2440 Bridge Avenue, Albert Lea, MN. The location is the former Herberger’s location in the Northbridge Mall and where MercyOne will open their doors upon completion and receive new patients.
“Never have I been so proud to be from Albert Lea,” commented Brad Arends, President of the Albert Lea Healthcare Coalition. “The doubters said this could never be done, but our citizens and business community kept this effort alive for over three years with their voice and pocketbooks.
