Minnesota museums are working to comply with updated NAGPRA regulations that strengthen the repatriation process for Native ancestral human remains and objects.
A 1990 law mandates Native American remains and funerary objects be returned to tribes, but the University of Minnesota still has hundreds of artifacts.
<p>Many institutions have been able to avoid repatriating artifacts because of the stringency of requirements that individual tribes document an affiliation with the objects in question, as well as a lack of transparency about holdings. </p>
