Eleven Malta-based scientists – seven of whom are University of Malta academics – are among the top two per cent most cited scientists worldwide, according to a Stanford University study.
The research, led by Prof. John Ioannidis, analysed scientists from 22 fields whose work was cited between 1965 and 2019.
Joseph N Grima, Georgios N Yannakakis, Godfrey Baldacchino, Albert Caruana, Michael A Borg, Giuseppe di Giovanni and Ruben Gatt from the University of Malta; Carmelo Scarpignato from the United Campus of Malta, Birkirkara, Victor Grech and David Pace from Mater Dei Hospital and MCAST’s Mario Balzan have made it in the database of top scientists.

APPS. On February 10, at his residence, JOSEPH, aged 82, passed away peacefully. He leaves to mourn his irreparable loss his wife Lina, his children Louisella and her husband Michael Bonello, Anna Maria and her husband Nicky Camilleri, his grandchildren Rebecca, Daniel and Nicola, his brother Edwin and his wife Madalene, his sister Astrid and her husband Anthony Cordina, his brother-in-law Albert Caruana and his wife Marie, his sisters-in-law Josephine Pecorella, Yvonne Caruana and Marlene Caruana, his nephews and nieces, other relatives and friends. The funeral cortège leaves Mater Dei Hospital on Monday, February 15, at 8am for Attard parish church, where Mass præsente cadavere will be said at 9am followed by interment at Santa Maria Addolorata Cemetery. No flowers by request but donations to Id-Dar tal-Providenza, Siġġiewi, would be appreciated. Lord, grant him eternal rest. A word of thanks to the medical staff at Mater Dei Hospital.

The event marks the merger of the 3rd Mediterranean Oil & Gas Summit and the 8th Balkans Petroleum event. The conference will bring together European and Balkans officials with IOCs, the organiser said.
IN-VR’s co-CEO Chryssa Tsouraki highlighted the regional appetite for investment and new projects. “The countries of the Mediterranean are going through a restructuring of policies and laws. There are projects with regional importance and global importance,” she said.
