President johnson signed the Voting Rights act of 1965 into law 52 years ago this month on august 6, 1965. It is widely considered to be one of the most significant and successful pieces of civil rights legislation ever enacted and has been used to combat varied Voter Suppression tactics, particularly targeting communities of color and limited englishproficient voters. I am especially proud to highlight the commissions role in the creation of that land mark legislation. In the years leading to the passage of the Voting Rights act, the Commission Held a number of hearings and issued reports. In march 1965, president johnson called for new voting legislation embodying the recommendations of the civil rights commission. In state of carolina versus kasenbek, the Supreme Court rejected a challenge to the constitutionality of the 1965 Voting Right
