Douglas Ross: Borders has visit from Scottish Tory leader

DOUGLAS Ross visited the Borders this week ahead of the Scottish Parliament election on May 6. The leader of the Scottish Conservatives was in Coldstream yesterday (April 29) as part of the party’s campaign trail. Mr Ross was joined by fellow Conservative Rachael Hamilton, who is hoping to be re-elected as the Holyrood representative for Ettrick, Roxburgh and Berwickshire next week. READ MORE: Mr Ross said: “Voters here in the Borders can send the SNP a clear message on May 6 that they don’t want another divisive referendum. “All our focus should be on our recovery and rebuilding our communities. Instead, Nicola Sturgeon wants to drag this area back to the politics of division and through another independence referendum during our recovery phase.

West Linton: Old Bakehouse closes to merge with Gordon Arms

A PEEBLESSHIRE restaurant has been forced to close permanently because of the coronavirus pandemic, the owners have announced. The Old Bakehouse – on Main Street in West Linton – has shut its doors permanently, with Fiona Ingram describing it as “a heart-rending decision”. Ms Ingram also operates the Gordon Arms Hotel in the village and has decided to merge the Old Bakehouse with the site on Dolphinton Road. “It’s purely down to the pandemic,” said Ms Ingram about the Old Bakehouse closure. “In the last year, the Gordon Arms has barely been open and we’ve closed it three times. “We didn’t want to lose both pubs,” she added. “We could move our food services into the Gordon Arms where we’ve got the rooms and the bar so it’s a much nicer facility on the whole.”
