Glasgow Times Letters: We need to help save city s high streets

Famous streets, such as Sauchiehall Street, will never bounce back. The street looked bad enough before the pandemic with huge empty stores, such as the old BHS.  I can’t imagine many retailers rushing back to fill massive units like that any time soon. The council will have to seriously think out of the box about how to ensure the street doesn’t become a no-go area. Perhaps more green spaces could help.  Demolishing the BHS store and making a multi-use space for markets and outdoor events could help transform the street and encourage more investment.  Catherine James Via email

Why does the media give UK ministers credit for vaccinations in Scotland?

HAVING listened for weeks to the First Minister defend Scotland’s vaccine roll-out because it was apparently “falling behind”, I was amused to see that, as of Valentine’s Day, England was behind Scotland in administering the first jab. As Jason Leitch points out, it is not a race and this is an entirely frivolous statistic, but I doubt any politician or journalist will be asking Boris Johnson why England is “falling behind”. It is only the devolved nations that can be considered to “fall behind”, after all – England is always world-leading! Eyes roll, shoulders shrug, we move on. Roger Hyam

Glasgow Times letters: Don t forget that we had 20 days with no deaths

I READ the letter from M Wells of Anniesland in Wednesday’s Glasgow Times who complained that nurseries in Scotland were closed whilst those in England were open.  She should remember that Covid death rates in England have consistently been higher than here, indeed there was a period of more than 20 days in Scotland in the summer when no Covid deaths were recorded at all. Possibly our more cautious approach is working, Alastair Stirling Via email NICOLA Sturgeon has been saying a lot recently about independence being Scotland’s route to rejoining the EU. I wish it were true, but the fact is that nations such as Spain, Belgium, Italy and Denmark with their own “UK problem” – regions wanting to break away – are going to block our entry.
