The city. It was a chaotic collapsing of forces. The official story is that the sinaloa and Juarez Cartels are battling for the city and the access it provides to the us drug market only a few hundred meters away. Now theres an estimated 100200 thousand addicts in the city. That means every Street Corner is worth killing for. Cause every Street Corner is a point of sale now. Every little tienda is a point of sale. More than 8,000 people have been killed here since 2008, the year mexican president calderon sent in the army to carry out his offensive against the cartels. 3951 people were recorded murdered in 2010 alone. We traveled to juarez try to understand how human life here came to be worth so much less than the drugs being trafficked through. My question was, at the beginning, okay the whole country is in a fight, why has juarez been the bloodiest . This must be related to just the story of this city. The first game on juarezs newest football field. Its being played to mark a year
Lyndon johnson was certainly an imperial president. I think what we see in johnson we start to see the cusp of the end of the imperial president s in the United States. There have been president s the acted in three fleet since then. The bush, no doubt about that. But he was the last person i think to understand the use and abuse of power. Unfortunately, he abused it in many respects. As did many of the president s who succeeded him. But he wasnt the last person who understood because of his constant demand of power within the United States he understood much better how to maneuver power overseas. He was less interested in what went on overseas and, unfortunately, his presidency was really defined by his adventure in vietnam which were almost less than in many respects. He inherited that. He did not making any better, no doubt about that but he did understand the use of power and especially within the United States. He was i think one of the last president s who did it truly understand
And we kind of stay there for some time. Why did it wane . Look at drug patterns. They remain there about 15 or 16 years and a run in 20year cycles. The crack cocaine cycle is no more. There are still people who use crack cocaine. It is nowhere near where it used to be. Just make sure there is someone in front of you. If there is somebody you can focus on it is easier. How far are we going down . We will stop here. One of the things i wanted to point out to you here coming down the steps you will see that the 36 rib trusses that form the superstructure of the dome converge here to the 12 that go up to support the statue of freedom. As you can imagine, trying to merge 36 items into such a small space at the top was too great so every third truss is the one that continues forward and the two that flank it merge into its side for buttressing support. What you also see is the enormous super structure has very slender bands that reach down to suspend the shell below. And it has a very thin element that reaches out to the shape of the exterior dome. The brilliant thing about this design is that the dome is exposed to very harsh conditions on the outside, very cold in the winter, extremely hot in the summer under direct sun.
