Join the conversation - Telegraph readers on the new quarantine rules and fines

Telegraph readers have had their say on the maximum 10-year prison sentence for breaking quarantine rules 10 February 2021 • 10:54am On Tuesday, Health Secretary Matt Hancock announced that anyone seeking to conceal their trip from a red list country would face a £10,000 fine or prosecution and a maximum 10-year prison sentence. The announcement sparked anger from senior Tories, the travel industry and critics of Covid restrictions led by former Supreme Court judge Lord Sumption.  Telegraph readers were also divided over jail-terms for those hiding visits, with some arguing the measures were proportionate given the threat of new Covid variants to Britain’s pandemic recovery. Meanwhile, others questioned the wisdom of imposing a maximum prison sentence of 10 years for a regulatory breach.

Telegraph readers on London school closures: As a teacher in Greenwich, I want my school to remain open

Telegraph readers on London school closures: As a teacher in Greenwich, I want my school to remain open Headteachers in Greenwich, south east London, have been asked to close their schools and move to remote learning 14 December 2020 • 3:18pm The news that the Government has rejected calls from the London Mayor, Sadiq Khan, to close schools where Covid infection rates are rising has cast doubts over Downing Street s education policy.  Schools have been told that they could be sued if they close early to try and stem the spread of coronavirus before the five-day relaxation of rules at Christmas.  In particular, London has found itself at the centre of a surge in coronavirus cases and will be placed in Tier 3 from Wednesday, prompting calls for the capital to close the gates to its schools ahead of next week’s holidays. In defiance of the Government, the leader of the Royal Borough of Greenwich, in south east London, has asked headteachers to shut their schools.
