Durham s New Elvet Bridge will reopen to traffic and pedestrians in October following repairs

Durham s New Elvet Bridge will reopen in October A BUSY bridge in Durham City centre that has been closed for critical works will reopen to all traffic and pedestrians in October, it has been announced. New Elvet Bridge was fully closed in July last year to allow essential repairs to be carried out to make the bridge structurally sound. Since that time, major progress has been made and the central span of the bridge has now been lowered back into position, allowing the project to move into the final phases. Durham County Council has hailed it a significant milestone in the project and a great engineering achievement .

Durham city centre bridge repairs on course for autumn end

New Elvet Bridge, Durham WORK on the reconstruction of a primary road river crossing in Durham is on course for completion by the autumn of 2021. New Elvet Bridge has been closed since mid-July to allow for the first major repair and refurbishment overhaul to combat the effects of ageing and weathering in its 45-year-old lifespan. The bridge, connecting New Elvet with Leazes Bowl roundabout, carries an average of 17,000 vehicles across the River Wear each day and is considered an important link between the east and west sides of the city. Work completed so far has seen the road surface removed and a superstructure erected round the structure enabling the central section to be lifted about one foot above the bridge level.
