How the coronavirus ended up in Antartica

comments Dr. Cindy Prins, as epidemiologist at the University of Florida, once told me that COVID-19 is a behavioral disease. What she meant was that people who work from home, or those who in general avoid other people, have a very low risk of getting infected with it. That is because the coronavirus spreads from person to person, through respiratory droplets from coughing, sneezing, or talking. This is part of the reason why remote locations where people infrequently go like Antarctica have been able to avoid its deathly grip thus far. Unfortunately, the icy southernmost continent is no longer untouched by the pandemic.

COVID in Antarctica: What do we know about the cases and how it got there?

Nearly a year after the first cluster of COVID-19 cases were first officially reported China, the pandemic has reached Antarctica. Until December 21, the world s southernmost continent had not reported a single case of COVID-19 but 36 have now been confirmed at the General Bernardo O Higgins base, a Chilean research station, The Chilean Army said in a statement that 26 of those who tested positive are military personnel while the remaining 10 are civilian contractors. All were carrying out maintenance work at the base. It is unclear how these people were infected and whether the disease has spread to other research facilities on the continent.

The year has thrown everything in its power at brokers, the financial services industry and Australia as a whole, as  Malavika Santhebennur recaps. The coronavirus pandemic, lockdowns, economic shutdown, government survival and stimulus packages, a recession and a mammoth budget deficit all impacted us this year. Amid all this, the government made significant announcements around lending policies and regulations for mortgage brokers. Here, we (attempt to!) summarise the year that was 2020!
