Died: December 2, 2020 BOBBY WISHART, who has died aged 87, was a leading Scottish footballer of the 1950s and early 1960s who achieved the remarkable feat of winning old First Division championships with two different clubs, neither being Rangers or Celtic. In 1955 he was instrumental in Aberdeen’s first title success, while in 1962 he was a key member of the Dundee team that won its only top-tier league title. At Aberdeen he also claimed a League Cup winner’s medal in 1955 and a loser’s medal in the 1959 Scottish Cup Final. League success at Dundee led to the European Cup the following season, during which the Dark Blues had an unforgettable campaign, reaching the semi-final, where they lost over two legs to the formidable AC Milan, with Bobby playing in every single match.

He steered the club to their first league title, but his reputation as a martinet meant that he was respected rather than liked

Jim McLean, who has died aged 83, managed Dundee United from 1971 until 1993, an era of remarkable success for the hitherto unheralded Scottish club during which the mercurial McLean steered the Tangerines to their first (and only) league title and to the brink of the European Cup Final.
McLean’s feats are not well remembered south of the border and in Scotland he was arguably outshone by his contemporary Alex Ferguson, then at Aberdeen and with whom McLean temporarily broke the dominance of the Old Firm, Celtic and Rangers.
