The company confirmed that Shepherd will begin a process of handover from Connellan with immediate effect and will become group chief executive from 1 July 2021.
In her new role, Connellan will report directly to chief executive of Standard Life Aberdeen Stephen Bird as a member of the executive leadership team.

Shepherd is expected to take up his new role from 1 July 2021, subject to regulatory approval.
He is currently group deputy chief executive and CEO of the group’s international business.
Connellan has started a handover process before she takes up her new role at Standard Life Aberdeen, which intends to rebrand as ‘Abrdn’.
Shepherd has more than 27 years’ experience in financial services. He joined Brooks Macdonald in 2002 and has held several roles across the business.
He became group deputy chief executive in 2015 and took up his current international role in April 2019. Shepherd is also chairman of the two legal entities within the international business.

Standard Life Aberdeen (SLA) has hired Caroline Connellan as chief executive of personal wealth based in London.
She will take oversee the firm’s personal wealth businesses including 1825 Financial Planning and SLA’s direct-to-customer propositions including digital retirement advice.
Connellan will report directly to Stephen Bird, chief executive of SLA, as a member of the executive leadership team.
She joins from Brooks Macdonald Group, where she is chief executive, having led that business since early 2017.
