dana: judge roy moore cruised to victory last night in the primary runoff in alabama giving a major victory to the populist movement fed up with business as usual in washington, d.c. president trump campaigned for judge moore s opponent in the race but still seems happy with last night s election results. he came a long way and ran a good race. roy ran a really great race and i know what they did with mitch, they used him in the campaign. he worked hard and i m sure things will work out.. dana: joining us from washington for reaction is rick cline, political director for abc news. how does washington feel what happened in alabama last night? a localized situation or does it foretell something else? it s a big deal. the disruption has only begun. the idea that trumpism canit defeat president trump has huge ramifications for the 2018 landscape and for what goes onon in president trump s head when he is thinking about how he will conduct himself politically. the fact he chose the
embarrassed that the candidate he threw his support behind was easily defeated by roy moore here in alabama last night. the president watched the returns roll in as he rode back on air force one to washington from a dinner in new york. and we re told that the president feels like he was misled by people like senate majority leader, mitch mcconnell, and others, who convinced him to not only divorce luther strange, but to rally for him and really throw his political capital behind this candidate. now, this is something, a concern that the president had long before strange lost last night. he was worried that he would too low-energy of a candidate, and was worried about backing the establishment guy in this race. those concerns were only heightened when his former chief strategist, steve bannon, backed and campaigned for roy moore, the guy that strange lost to here in alabama last night. and now we re told that the president is angry about this and it seems like he s blaming everyone but
he campaigned for moore and warned last night, this is just the beginning. we re going to see in state after state after state, people that follow the model of judge moore, that do not need to raise money from the elites, from the crony capitalists, from the fat cats in washington, d.c., new york city, silicon valley. all right. let s start right there. and cnn s kaitlan collins, she s joining me now from birmingham, alabama. kaitlan, how is the president feeling this morning? reporter: not too good, kate. we re told that the president is infuriated that the candidate he endorsed was defeated pretty easily here in alabama last night by roy moore. he watched the returns as he flew back on air force one from a dinner in new york. and during that ride, he vented his frustrations that people like senate majority leader, mitch mcconnell, and his other political advisers had not only told him to endorse luther strange in this race, but to come down to alabama and campaign for him. and
i would never lie. you can definitely say you would not lie. i would absolutely not lie. i ll produce my tax returns, absolutely. still waiting for those. joining us now, tom brokaw. good morning. good to see you. good morning. your take on what we saw in alabama last night? last week i had little time with steve bannon. this is what he wanted to have happen. he wanted to send a message to the president, he said and approved to him that he has abandoned the base. the fatal error for the president the last month or so has been that meeting with chuck schumer and nancy pelosi, he said. that ran completely against the grain of the base in the state of alabama and that we re going to get moore in. so, they moved, in effect, his entire operation down there to get the campaign. about a year ago, moore showed up. he is a hugely popular figure in the right down there. it was a rock star coming into
