Endangered Alabama salamander gets new preserve

The Red Hills salamander is a true Alabama original, found nowhere else in the world, and hanging on by a thread across six Alabama counties.
Now, that one-of-a-kind Alabama native will have a few thousand more acres of undisturbed land to try to make a comeback.
State, federal and private conservation interests gathered last week to celebrate the addition of almost 5,000 acres of protected land to the salamander’s habitat in Monroe County, near the community of Franklin.
The two tracts purchased total 4,911 acres and will eventually be made available to the public for recreation, including hunting and birding. Alabama wildlife officials say the tract will be designated as a wildlife management area sometime next year.
