offering as its countermeasure or its answer to what s going on right now in this part of politics? democratic leader in the senate chuck schumer is still with us. senator schumer, thanks for letting me kind of set that all up a little bit. let me get your response to that question. we have two steps in pushing our republican colleagues on this issue. first, patty murray has put together a resolution that says we support roe. we support a woman s right to have her own health care and to control her own body. just about every democrat has already signed on to it, and we are asking every day we will be asking our republican colleagues are you with roe or against roe? you have to state a position. and the pressure will mount from the states. now these senators who could control what happens are hypocrites. why? some of them have said they don t agree with the alabama decision.

others who are committed to standing up for those without a voice. reporter: just hours earlier, alabama governor kay ivey signed a near total ban on abortion, imposing 99-year prison sentences on doctors. the only exception, if the mother s life is in danger. in the alabama state house, an opponent of the bill pressed a supporter on why that s the only exception and got a puzzling answer. does the bill make exception for patients who are victim of rape? and, of course, i kind of know the answer. can you tell me why it doesn t? it allows for anything that s available today is still available up until that woman knows she s pregnant. reporter: the alabama decision has jolted the national debate over abortion rights. i don t want to be a fear monger, but i do believe that they re trying to go on a path that would totally dismantle roe v. wade and we have to be
similar law in arizona. trace: remember, the most controversial part of arizona law is allowing the police officers to check the status of anyone they pulled over for a different reason. yet, that part of the law was blocked by a federal judge, blocked by the 9th circuit, but, now, a judge in billion billion has ruled that part of alabama s law is good to go. now, even though the obama administration says, no, that s overstepping federal authority, which, it clearly shows the judge said no, it is not, and her quote is the statute does not require the government to act upon this information and the government still retains discretion as to whether it wishes to pursue those found to be unlawfully present, in other words the fed dozen not have to deport these people and that shows a supreme showdown is coming. this alabama decision sets the stage for a much broader series of supreme court decisions that dramatically expand the role of parallel state authority of helping
