“I was in a bad situation when I heard about the Tamkeen project. I had been trying to think of ways to help my husband financially,” said Hana who participated in a professional cooking course to start her own business. “I was hoping desperately to take part in the training. I wanted to prove that I can rely on myself to start our lives again.
Along with 194 women from Ajdabiya, Hana participated in Tamkeen, a two-month vocational training aimed at meeting the immediate food needs of vulnerable women, support their skills development and create job opportunities for them so they can become self-sufficient. The programme is jointly implemented by UN Women, the World Food Programme (WFP), and local partner Asarya, with generous support from the Government of Japan.
(June 11, 2021) This week, 80 years ago, Allied forces, commanded by Gen. Sir Noel Beresford-Peirse, reluctantly, and under pressure from London, launched âOperation Battleaxe.â
The Allied forces, now designated XIII Corps, included the British 7th Armored Division, commanded by Maj.-Gen. Michael OâMoore Creagh; the 4th Indian Division, commanded by Maj.-Gen. Frank Messervy; and the 22nd Guards Brigade, commanded by Brig.-Gen. Ian D. Erskine.
It was a feeble attempt at relieving the siege of Tobruk, which today has a population of 120,000, and is approximately 90 miles west of the Egyptian border, 270 miles east of Benghazi, 260 miles east of Agedabia and 630 miles east of the Libyan capital of Tripoli.

(April 23, 2021) This week, 80 years ago, the Siege of Tobruk was entering its third week. Before it was lifted, 241 days would pass.
The garrison consisted of soldiers of the 9th Australian Division, together with an Indian cavalry brigade, commanded by Maj. Gen. Leslie Morshead, nicknamed, by his troops, âMing the Merciless.â Soon, the defenders would earn the sobriquet âRats of Tobruk,â courtesy of the traitorous Nazi radio announcer William Joyce, a/k/a âLord Haw-Haw.â
Tobruk is in Libya, on the Mediterranean Sea, less than 80 miles from the Egyptian border. It is 288 miles east of Benghazi, 388 miles east of Agedabia and 630 miles east of Tripoli, by air. It probably has the best natural harbor in North Africa, which made it important for any Axis invasion of Egypt from Libya. The city currently has a population of 120,000.
