The plant is the fruit of five years of research by KAUST professor, Pascal Saikaly and his team, and addresses the issues of access to clean water and sanitation as guided by Vision 2030.
Conventional biological wastewater treatment plants use microorganisms in the form of small, suspended aggregates referred to as bio-flocs to break down and remove pollutants such as ammonium and phosphate in the wastewater.
