Rock drawings may look like a child’s art to some but they actually help scientists and experts understand what life was like in the past. The Wilayat of Al Awabi in the Governorate of South Al Batinah has been home to some of these important historical drawings.
Located between the interior and the coastal regions, the drawings in Al Awabi date back to distant times, a document-of-sort to the important events that took place. These rock drawings and writings serve as a cultural archive and a source of ancient Omani history.

Muscat: The Ministry of Heritage and Tourism on Tuesday signed an agreement with the Industrial Innovation Centre (IIC) for an Omani Sarooj (lime) innovation project.
The agreement was signed by Eng. Ibrahim Said Al Kharousi, Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism, and Dr. Abdullah Mohammed Al Mahrooqi, CEO of the IIC.
The “Project for Innovation in Sarooj” aims to develop the industry and upgrade its sustainability. This gypsum-like material consists of silicon and aluminum. It was used earlier in the Sultanate as a construction material in building aflaj (water channels) and military bulwarks like forts and castles. Currently, it is used in restoration or repair works.
