Celebrating the Muslim festival of Eid with his family on Thursday, Umar Mogra needed no reminder of the lethal capacity of Covid-19.
In February the virus swept through his family home in the narrow terraced streets of the Rumworth area of Bolton, infecting Umar, a 24-year-old pharmacology student at the University of Central Lancashire, and claiming the life of his 54-year-old father.
Why are you seeking to run for the township council?
My name is Saad A. Toor and I have been a Bridgewater resident since the summer of 2019. As a newcomer within the community, I sought to delve into being involved locally, beyond just being a registered voter. I believe sound American citizenship requires active engagement that goes past participating in elections via voting, a right that countless people sacrificed their life to give to me: A son of South Asian immigrants who was born and raised in Connecticut. I am fluent in the following four languages: English, Urdu / Hindi, and Punjabi. I do not believe in being a bystander nor holding sparse involvement in my community.
SINGAPORE - Six mosques have been closed temporarily after being visited by individuals who tested positive for Covid-19.
They are: Petempatan Melayu Sembawang Mosque, Abdul Hamid Kampung Pasiran Mosque, Hajjah Fatimah Mosque, Al-Falah Mosque, Yusof Ishak Mosque and Al-Iman Mosque.
All six will reopen for Friday prayers on April 30 after undergoing deep cleaning and disinfection.
In a statement on Thursday (April 29), the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore (Muis) said that the individuals who visited the mosques were asymptomatic and had not shown any signs or symptoms upon entry.
It added that while the mosques already have a comprehensive cleaning and disinfection regime in place, the temporary closure is an important precautionary measure, especially with the development of new Covid-19 virus strains.
