The Associated Press Alan Canfora, who was one of nine students who were wounded in the 1970 Kent State shootings but survived, has died. He was 71. Canfora died Dec. 20 at home from an illness unrelated to COVID-19, according to a Facebook post by his sister, Chic Canfora. “It is with immense sadness that I share news of the passing of my beloved brother, Alan Canfora a devastating loss to our family, friends and the Kent State/May 4 community,” she wrote in the post as reported by the Akron Beacon Journal. As a junior at Kent State, Canfora was one of the hundreds of students who protested at the Ohio campus May 1-4. They were demonstrating against the Vietnam War and the National Guard’s presence on their campus.

By Tom Moore Dec 30, 2020 (Kent) - There will be a scholarship at Kent State University to honor Alan Canfora, the recently deceased survivor of the May 4, 1970 shooting of students by the Ohio National Guard, who later became the biggest advocate of programs and events commemorating the events of that day. Canfora s name has been given to the Alan Canfora Memorial Endowed Scholarship Fund. It was set up by 1974 KSU graduate Michael Solomon. “Kent State lost one of its best in the surprising death of Alan Canfora, Solomon said. Surprising, because those like me who knew Alan thought he would live forever. True to his career as a library science major, Alan maintained the most knowledge of anyone about the events and aftermath of May 4, an event that touched and shaped many lives. Alan also carried with him the strongest of opinions about those events. But what endeared Alan to me was his ability to look at things he did, and openly say how he had wished he had done them d

Scholarship established in Alan Canfora s name Staff Report A scholarship in Alan Canfora s name has been created to honor his life and legacy by supporting future Kent State University students. One of nine Kent State University students wounded in the May 4, 1970, shootings on campus, Canfora, 71, died Dec. 20 following a short illness. Canfora earned his undergraduate degree in 1972 and a master s in library science in 1980. He was among those wounded by Ohio National Guard soldiers who opened fire during a peaceful demonstration on the campus. Four other students Allison Krause, Jeffrey Miller, Sandra Scheuer and William Schroeder were killed during the shooting.
