At he Mediterranean Biennale, the art must go on – The Forward

The fourth Mediterranean Biennale presents works by 60 international artists in public spaces across Haifa and Sakhnin Valley. The exhibition joins art world superstars, rising stars and emerging voices from countries that are rarely seen in Israeli museums and galleries, including Iran, Afghanistan, Turkey and Bahrain. In response to the pandemic, curators Avital Bar Shay and Belu-Simion Fainaru, in collaboration with the Wizo Academic Center, have titled the event “Living Together - Crossing Borders,” reflecting issues of solidarity and interpersonal interaction in the cityscape at a time of social distancing and isolation. In Haifa, one of the few mixed cities in Israel, the stitches that hold the fabric of everyday life are bound by complicated, conflicting realities experienced by various diverse communities. Sharjah Art Foundation explores Middle East, Latin America links an hour ago Sharjah Art Foundation s Bait Obaid Al Shamsi serves as a venue for art exhibitions, events, artist studios and residencies. Muhammad Yusuf, Features Writer Sharjah Art Foundation has announced Genealogies in the Middle East and Latin America, an online screening programme featuring 21 video and film artists and collectives from the two regions. Taking place June 1 – July 11, the project explores historical and contemporary relationships between artists in the two regions, in order to consider their shared histories of colonisation and the close links developed through several cycles of migration over the last 150 years from nations such as Lebanon, Syria, Palestine, Turkey, Egypt, Jordan and Iraq to countries in South America such as Peru, Chile, Mexico as well as Brazil, Argentina, Colombia and Venezuela.

New online film festival to screen works from the Middle East and Latin America

The chain begins with Alia Farid’s Theatre of Operations (2017) that reflects the artist s background, which is rooted in and between Latin America as much as the Middle East. Farid will then launch the series by proposing two works from these regions that have been influential to her work. The videos will be presented consecutively, with each of the respective artists inviting the participation of another artist to follow. Thus, the programme unfolds. Artists taking part in the project include Farid, Mounira Al Solh, Francis Alys, Claudia Aravena Abughosh, Arias & Aragon, Guillermo Cifuentes, Gilda Mantilla and Raimond Chaves, Oscar Munoz, Enrique Ramirez, Elena Tejada-Herrera, Maya Watanabe and Akram Zaatari.
