and to lay out bold plans to address the problems and to ask the fellow americans for help in solving them. and in doing so, he inspired a generation to enter public service and ask what they could do for their kcountry. president barack obama inspired me in the same way. my life changed in 2008 because a young candidate was fired up and ready to go and said yes, we can. without barack obama i might still be sitting on the couch eating doritoes and watching sports [ laughter ] president obama embodies the definition of courage offered by ernest hemmingway, grace under pressure. from the first days to the last, the president con ssistently pu the national interests above his own interests while resisting cynicism that all too often has a system that encourages it. he comprehends health care reform with the first order of business knowing that it would cost him and the party politically and he continued the fight that was wamged in the kennedy administration and my
direction or another may be wrong for some. this morning president obama delivered his final weekly address. i d like to play a piece of that for you now and then talk. it has been the honor of my life to serve you as president. i am even more optimistic about our kcountry s promise and look forward to working along your side as a citizen for all my days that remain. what do you see as the key parts of president obama s legacy and what do you think we ll be talking about or will still be affecting us 20 years from now? 20 wow. i m not sure that i have looked out that far how about tomorrow. what i can say we ve got to look at where president obama started. the worst economy in the world. the whole world economy was about to collapse and he was able to get fund iing through congress to actually bail out wall street, to bail out also the auto industry.
problem is that the founders of the kcountry were very worried about the ability of foreign governments to direct funds to a sitting president and influence his judgment. it is corrupting. they put it in the constitution and it is a serious issue. all right. and for president-elect trump. i am sorry to cut it short, but i am out of town, and i wish that we had more. that it is for our live coverage, and up next is meet the press. i m francis rivera, and thank you for being with me today.
forward. but what we heard in cleveland last week was not particularly republican. and it sure was not conservative. did the president inoculate rank and file republicans from donald trump with that comment? no, no. i completely agree with what the president said. the republican party is the grand old party and it has done great things for the country, but what we have been saying so them is take back the party, ad it has been hijacked by the radical wing of, i don t know of what in our country and not even of your party, and when president bush was president, we treated him with respect. we got a lot of done, and including the war in iraq, and privatizing social security and he is one of the best presidents in immigration, and he was disappointed by his own party for not support ing thing that of the biggest energy bills in the history of our kcountry, an the list goes on, and so, no, we need a strong republican party, and i don t paint everybody with
donald trump is right now the republican frontrunner, and no doubt about it. let me ask you, is he qualified to be president of the united states and the leader on the world stage? anyone that the american public says they want president is qualified to be president. i know that sounds like i am avoiding the question, and it is not my style. you are. you are. and i want to make that clear on the front end, but i think that he is incredibly divisive figure. the the kcountry has never done well when the leader of the country appeals to people s fears as opposed to their hopes. that is what worries me about donald trump. if donald trump gets a nomination and wins the elect n election, if he is as smart as i think, he is going to reget having said the things that he said and done. the whole idea as we were talking about before about how to pull the country together for god sake, and pull the politics together down here, how does donald trump do it? how does donald trump on the tan
