dan, tell me how close to homes and vineyards these flames are. reporter: well, hi, brooke. this fire has just been incredibly explosive. let me explain where i am. we are in the sky view neighborhood in santa rosa, and there are many dozens of homes in this one subdivision that are destroyed. you ve got a couple of homes across the street that are in tact, but pretty much everything else is levelled. the scope of the devastation is just unbelievable. most of the flames, at least in this neighborhood, are out. the fire is sort of smoldering a bit, but there still is active fire in the area. an untold number of homes and businesses have been destroyed. as i was making my way here, i took a few photos of what i encountered. we saw a lot of businesses that were destroyed. i saw a mcdonald s that was destroyed. a furniture store, a k mart, just so much devastation,
to america, to the one place on earth where the aspirations of people like them could be more than just dreams. here in america my father became a bartender. my mother a cashier, a maid, a k-mart store clerk. they never made it big, but they were successful. two immigrants with little money or education found stable jobs, owned a home retired with security and gave all four of their than their own. my parents achieved what has came to be known as the american dream. the problem is now too many americans are starting to doubt whether achieving that dream is still possible. hard-working families that are living paycheck to paycheck one unexpected expense away from disaster. young americans, unable to start a career or a business or a family, because they owe
[ applause ] they are on a mission. their target, trash left on the river s island from a recent flood. his volunteers are assure they get their marching orders. go straight in and work that way, okay. just bring it back to shore. and the search is on. if you took a k mart and just turned it upside down and just dumped it out. that s kind of what you find out there, everything. part of the pay off is the treasure of sorts that they find. i found a bat. and i found a sled. our motto is clean the rivers through hard work. that s what it takes. oh, another pair of jeans down. this mud sucks. it s kind of a pun.
forget black friday. it is black thursday. many stores are all right open as the hunt for door buster deals starts earlier and earlier every year. will the shoppers actually show up? a new poll finds 9 out of 10 americans say they will not shop today. joining me from a k mart in chicago is john yang. a very brave man, i have to say. how big are the crowds so far where you are? i see a few people. this k mart there no big crowds. only about 30 people in line when they opened about two hours ago. inside lots of room to move around and lots of carts and flat screen tvs coming out, all part of the retailers trying to get a piece of that limited holiday shopping budget earlier and earlier. predawn friday used to be the start of the holiday shopping season. with the annual running of the bargain hunters.
